Froggy Monday

Charisma and I walked to the pond again, our daily ritual. The frog chorus was full. You could hear hundreds of different voices and a few bullfrogs interspersed. Charisma almost pulled me into the water, when a frog splashed !
One green frog floating.

A leopard frog, I believe.

Three pairs of frogs, mating. Look closely at the black sqiggly lines in the water. If you zoom in, the lines are dotted. Eggs!!!!!!

Another shot.

Pink.

My Brittany pointing!

Look ahead, there is the duck in the water....

Saturday Photos at the Pond

We witnessed a cormorant swim, dive twice, then catch a fish (amazing) and swallow it.

He stretched his neck, the fish bulged in his throat. I am so glad I had my camera. I wish I had started shooting earlier. I didn't really know what the bird was until I zoomed in on my computer!

The cormorant's beak was distinctive.

And his wings.....

Mallard. So close.

Turtles on a log.

And an out of focus Green Heron. I thought it was a sandpiper until I looked closer. It is so hard to see what you have shot on the monitor, in the sun!

The Royal Treatment

A neighbor recommended this book to us. I have been engrossed in it for the last two days. Dr. Royal is changing my mind about what we feed our dog.
His dog Mugsy is a pug who has had a variety of health issues. In the past few weeks, the dog is feeling dramatically better with guidance from Dr. Royal. He is trotting around like he is 5!

Dangers of Dogs Eating Acorns: Ingested Oak Leaves, Buds, and Bark Can Cause Kidney Failure

Dervish was munching acorns yesterday. I think I will stop him from eating them....
I wasn't sure if they could be harmful, so I looked it up.

He has been having great fun catching buzzing cicadas and chomping them down!

Vomiting, diarrhea, and renal failure may be symptoms shown by dogs eating acorns or drinking water that oak leaves have soaked in.
I checked this out after Dervish was chomping on fallen acorns! Now I won"t let him!

Dervish and Whisper: the Bat Dogs

Some new pictures of the "kids". The bat hunters.

Bats on the Path

Last night when we walked the dogs, Dervish and Whisper pounced on a leaf in the middle of the sidewalk. Together.
The the "leaf" turned over and sort of hissed. A tiny sound from a tiny creature. I saw its teeth and immediately knew what it was. A  BAT.
Not lively, but injured or sick. I pulled the dogs away as soon as I realized what it was.
Later, I walked back, armed with a plastic container, lid and flashlight. If it was still there, in the same spot on the sidewalk, I would capture it... without touching it, of course. Rabies?
I swapped out the lid for some mesh fabric when I got home. I duct taped it securely, and placed the container in our garage for overnight safe keeping.
In the morning, Ed made calls to Animal Control and, after MANY calls, to many places,  Lake County responded. An officer came out to pick it up. The bat was still alive... barely. They would call us if it was rabid.
I don't think the dogs were bitten, their rabies shots are current. Our vet was not concerned. If the bat turns out to be rabid ... we will see about rabies booster shots. We will take all precautions.

A Walk in the Woods, by Caryn Green

My friend Caryn Green wrote this article. It will bring a tear to your eye.
We recently reconnected. We were friends in High School, way back when!

Dervish

Dervish just doesn't know what to think about Whisper. He sniffs her bed when she is not in it. And he is perplexed.
He acted out of sorts and confused when Whisper was gone for 3 days.
